According to a report by The Indian Express, Gowri Shankar, identified as the admin of Tamilgun.in, was arrested by the Triplicane Police on Tuesday.

The same report states that Shankar, along with Tamilgun.in, allegedly administers 33 other fishy websites including some porn sites. The piracy accused has been booked under the video piracy act. He is currently being questioned by the Chennai city crime branch.

Initially, he was also suspected to be the admin of another notorious piracy website Tamilrockers.  However, after further investigation, the assumption was ruled out. Both these websites were infamous for leaking Tamil films online, hours after their release, reports The Indian Express.

Tamilrockers came into limelight after it threatened Singam 3 makers that they would live-stream the film on the day of its release, reports India Today. The same website was also responsible for leaking Ajith’s latest venture Vivegam on the day of its releaseadds The Indian Express.

Soon after Shankar’s arrest, Vishal, who is also the president of the Tamil Nadu Film Producers’ Council, addressed the press at the police station and said, “This is related to website piracy. A person who is behind one of such sites has been nabbed and is now in custody. Please give some time and we will announce all the details after investigation.” He also revealed that he tipped the police in the case, which led to Shankar’s arrest, as per The Indian Express.

Vishal has been on the forefront in fighting the piracy plague in the Tamil film industry for quite some time now. In 2014, Vishal was reported to have raided a video shop in Tirupur and got hold of many pirated CDs, as per the India Today report.

Vishal’s Thupparivaalan is directed by Mysskin, and also stars Prasanna, Andrea Jeremiah and Anu Emmanuel. The film is touted to be loosely inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, adds the India Today report. The film hits the theatres on Thursday.
