Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu‘s Judwaa 2 is off to a flying start. Not only did it manage to hold a 70 per cent average occupancy on day one, but it also raked in Rs 16.10 crore on the opening day. As trade analyst Taran Adarsh revealed on Twitter, “And the *updated* biz. #Judwaa2 crosses Rs 16 crore on Day 1. Fri Rs 16.10 crore. India biz. EXCELLENT!” With that, Varun Dhawan has achieved the unthinkable. He has not only managed to beat Akshay Kumar, but also Shah Rukh Khan at the box office on day one. Shocking?

Well, if you check out the opening day collections of their films in 2017, you will realise what we are talking about. Varun Dhawan’s Judwaa 2 has managed to rake in Rs 16.10 crore on a working Friday (day 1). This is much higher than what Shah Rukh Khan‘s Jab Harry Met Sejal (Rs 15.25 crore) and Akshay Kumar’s Jolly LLB 2 (Rs 13.20 crore) and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (Rs 13.10 crore) managed to collect on the first day. While some might argue that Raees (Rs 20.42 crore) had a higher opening day collection, let us inform you that the film was released mid-week (Wednesday) and had a huge holiday on the very next day (January 26 – Republic Day). This clearly benefited Raees. So quite clearly, Varun has beaten Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Harry Met Sejal and Akshay Kumar’s Jolly LLB 2 and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha on day 1, courtesy his latest release. In the meantime, with a fantastic word of mouth publicity and great reviews from the critics as well as the public, we are sure Judwaa 2 will definitely see a growth over the weekend and rake in excess of Rs 50 crore at the domestic box office. But can it become the highest opening weekend grosser of 2017? Well stay tuned to BollywoodLife to know more about this.
