We have heard so many stories of actors going to great lengths to get the nuances of their characters right. Some, become the character. We all know the story of Heath Ledger who suffered depression after playing the villain Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight due to his commitment to the role. And there are many more examples out there with actors with such sheer dedication, or should we say madness for their craft. One such actor is Ranveer Singh.
Bollywood hottie Ranveer recently wrapped up shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmavati. The actor only got rid of his beard and moustache a few days ago. He is playing the role of the Mughal emperor Alauddin Khilji, who wants Rani Padmini for his harem. The character is so menacing that playing it took a toll on Ranveer’s mental health. We had heard reports about how no one would dare talk to Ranveer once he was on the sets as he’d be so intimidatingly engrossed in his character. Now, the actor is facing the repercussions. Turns out he is having a hard time getting back to ‘normal’ after exploring the depths of such a cruel, dark character.
A news daily quotes a source, “Ranveer actually has his friends worried. To play Alauddin Khilji, he has been researching and exploring extreme negativity. He is a friendly, warm young man, like all of us. To become Khilji, he took the same route as he did to play Peshwa Bajirao. He locked himself up in his apartment, prepped and stayed in the headspace for weeks. Getting out of this dark, intimidating mindset wasn’t easy for him. The film has also been shot for almost a year now, so sustaining the Khilji persona was very challenging. It affected his reactions and behavior towards people. Which is why, his friends advised him to get help in emerging beyond Khilji. He is going to a psychiatrist to get rid of the Khilji influences.” ALSO READ: Oh no! This won’t be the first time Ranveer’s health took a toll after a role. In fact, when Ranveer was shooting for Sanjay’s last film Bajirao Mastani, his health took a nosedive while filming the third act of the script where the lead character falls fatally sick.
After Padmavati, Ranveer is set to start shooting for Zoya Akhtar’s light hearted film Gully Boyz. He plays a street rapper from Mumbai in the exciting project. It will be interesting to see how Ranveer makes the transition from Alauddin to a gully boy.
We wish Ranveer good health.
